School Visit: Fantastic Farmers!

Katharine Burrett, Deputy head, Great Bedwyn C of E School
We were delighted to welcome local farmers to our school. The children in KS2 took part in informative talks about a range of crops, including how they are grown and the foods they produce, such as cereals and vegetables we eat every day. They also learned about dairy farming, from caring for cows to how milk is collected and used to make products like cheese and yogurt.
The session on chickens was especially popular, where the children discovered how eggs are collected and sorted using machinery, and even saw examples of eggs laid without shells. Discussions about soil helped the children understand why healthy soil is so important for growing food. A real highlight was the opportunity for all children in the school to sit in the tractors and explore farm machinery up close.
This visit was organised through the Southern Streams Farmers Group, a collaboration of 31 farmers and landowners working together to make a positive difference to soil health, biodiversity and water quality, while also engaging with the local community (www.southernstreams.co.uk).
It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience, and we would like to say a big thank you to the farmers and organisers, Rob, David, Peter, TJ, Chris, Dave and Belinda for giving their time and sharing their knowledge with us.
